First, I have used a canadian site called www.myhosting.com. They give you a great host and you can buy the web domain name from them very cheeply. Excellent price. I have found they are fast, cheep and stable.

Second I like to use Adobe dreamweaver to make sites because it is a lot like using powerpoint (if you have ever used that) Fairly simple to use and lots fo tutorials. Adobe has other software that might not be too expensive as well

However you can find a lot of free website templates to get your self started on a home page.

And everything about the web is on the web, so you can search a lot of handy tutorial sites to teach you how to set up a website. That is how I learned. Making a simple site without too many bells and whistles can be fast and easy for a customer to use.

People generally make the mistake of putting up a website with a predictable list of pages like Home, Products, Support, About Us, Contact Us etc and expect to get results.

This is nothing but the translation of the concept of the physical store on to the internet. In the physical world, you can have a store in a market area, where there is a constant flow of people.

They will start noticing the store, start looking at the products at display, step in and start asking questions about them, their prices etc. Eventually the owner will start getting business slowly and steadily.

If you have put up a website having the best design with excellent features about all your products, but if I do not know you or your website, there is no way for me to reach your website.

The only way I can reach your website is if your webpage comes out within the first or second page of the search results. If your webpage comes out on the 50th result page, I will not be able to reach your site. It is as simple as that.

This is based on the results I had with my website some years back with the predictable pages as mentioned above. What happened? No visitors, no sales and eventually I had to close down the site.

When i start making websites I start thinking of every day practical ideas... I also will think of things I like to do or deal with day to day..... If you are looking to make money off of your website you might want ad auction ads which gives you some extra income for free by adding small ads on your site that connect people to bids on ebay and its easier to use than google adsense.

I was checking my temporary internet files this morning and found a few things that I know I haven%26#039;t accessed. For example, there are a few files named %26quot;searchresultsSBS%26quot;, and when I click on it, it%26#039;ll show that I %26quot;searched%26quot; for someone named %26quot;amanda iori%26quot;, %26quot;web domain hosting%26quot;, among other things.

I only use Firefox and found no suspicious activity when I looked in the history. When I opened up my Internet Explorer, however, there were records of my %26quot;visiting%26quot; other sites that I know I did not visit. Most were visited when both my husband and I were not even home, or sometimes when I was on the net. I am currently using a wireless adapter to connect to a wireless router, which is located in another room.

It%26#039;s more likely that you have a virus or other form of malware that is targeting internet explorer and planting files in the history. It may have change the IE homepage, too.

Run full virus and adware/spyware sweeps. I almost guarantee you%26#039;ll find something.

Well, most I have seen do have PPC ads on them. If they don%26#039;t, I suppose they are hoping to make money by charging for submissions, or by charging for other forms of advertising (banners, etc.) from other parties. I doubt most directory owners make much money from their directories, but there are probably a select few who make a lot. Once it%26#039;s up, there is very little maintenance work, besides approving/rejecting links.

You said your Domain Hosting Company, I assume they are only hosting from that line, therefore if you find your letter from Nominet confirming your domain name then there should be a security section on that, this will allow you to transfer your domain name into another company like BT etc without the need to contact your old Domain Hosting Company. Any domain can be moved online as long as you have served your minimum period. If you go to the BT website it even asks you if you want to transfer a domain name in, its that simple.

However if you do not have the letter from Nominet then I am not sure what the procedure would be, I would certainly check out the nominet website before using premium rate numbers, all the best ......%26lt;GB%26gt;

I%26#039;m trying to figure out my itemized deductions for 2007. I volunteer as a webmaster for a parks/recreation department in another county. I pay the domain/hosting fees out of my own pocket and am not reimbursed. I also am a volunteer webmaster %26amp; general volunteer for a recreation baseball team in the same county. I have traveled with the group to some out of town tournaments this year (been doing this for several years, actually), and am considered one of the team. This team is self-supporting; there are no profits, and the coaches are all volunteers. I have made two monetary contributions out of pocket, one for a media program, one for an out of state tournament. I pay all my own travel expenses to be with the group each year and am not reimbursed for anything. Can I deduct any of these costs whatsoever on itemized deductions? Just curious. Pretty much all of what you list are eligible deductions if the organization has 501(c)3 designation. You can%26#039;t deduct anything for your time, whether in the area of the website or the coaching. But out of pocket expenses can be deducted. The mileage deduction is much lower than business miles though, it%26#039;s 14 cents a mile.

I have read through many of the posts here to try and find the answer to my question, but I didn%26#039;t find what I was looking for.

Here it is. I am creating a website. I have the idea, the content, domain, hosting and plenty of things to make it successful. But here is the problem. A) You need a Web host to get pages on the Web. I learned about my Web host through a book called Creating Web Sites:The Missing Manual.

B) Your Web host will let you choose your domain name. I chose MissingMethods.com. As you can see, it was inspired by the book I read.

C) Consider using Dreamweaver CS3 to help you create and design your site: I was in the same position as you 2 months ago, facing the same issues, and that%26#039;s what I am using. It%26#039;s pretty good for people who don%26#039;t know what they are doing!

Do you mean a domain like www.foo.com? If so you have to buy the domain name, then find a host for it. www.godaddy.com is where you can buy the domain. You can host it with them, or you can find another host. See dreamhost, 1+1 etc...

I don%26#039;t know what is the best for me. Can I leave the OS Windows Xp Home as it is, or should I upgrade to a Linux Server OS? What should I upgrade it to? Also, I want to be able to host a website. I want it to have the whole works. PHP, MySQL, Java etc etc. Do I Google it and just install it? I want everything to not cost anything. I know MySQL is free, and some other stuff; but how do I get domains like Yourname.com or whateveryouwanthere.org? Is there a Tutorial on this? A video will work too. If you are good with Linux, I think Linux is the best way to host your website. Red hat 5 enterprise has the latest version of MySQL, PHP software in its application bundle. You can always download MySQL for free if you do not have it. This might be very costly if you want to do this on your own unless you have some kind experience on this. Most web hosting companies do all this for you for a small fee by using their servers. Yahoo web hosting is good for this and am using them myself for my websites. Yahoo also have tutorials on how to design and obtain your website. Always go some research before you make any decision.

Right : so I have a Primary Domain controller based on Windows 2003 Server,which also acts as File%26amp;Print Server and DNS server. The domain name is (i won%26#039;t give the real name,just example) VOO , all users log on to VOO.

The company has a website VOO.RO and email on the VOO.RO domain.

Any computer OUTSIDE the LOCAL/INTERNAL network can access VOO.RO website and email,but when a computer INSIDE the LOCAL network (pc%26#039;s logging to VOO domain controller) tries to access the VOO.RO email or website,there is an error %26quot;page not found%26quot;. Any other domain is accesible,any email account EXCEPT for VOO.RO (so there is nothing wrong with the ISP,etc) . I cannot use the public IP address of the VOO.RO instead of the DNS,as I have multiple domains hosted on one external physical server...

I have an internal site I created on my computer. Possibily this is because of 2 reasons, first is problem in outgoing SMTP server, on this case contact server administrator, second is possibily the server IP is in black list, means some one from that same server / same Ip did some email spamming, thats why few places its still blocked, may be yahoo already removed.

You can have a domain name and make it work as an alias for another domain name ... without buying hosting space..

You can have a domain name with hosting space and make it redirect to another domain name (which has its own hosting space).

These two are different

In the first case you just buy the domain name. Within the admin settings for the domain name (to which you should have access) you need to make arrangements such that this happens.

In the second case, you actually have a web site relating to the first domain name and .... within the home page of that ... you include a redirect .... (you can do it in different ways - one way is using a meta tag refresh in 0 seconds)... whereby any request to that site will be immediately transferred to the other site...

Check whether you have bought just the domain name or hosting acount ... in both cases....

If you have already bought hosting account while paying for both the domain names... you can use case 2 till the hosting period expires and then go for case 1 afterwards...

Windows 2003 SMTP server help!?

Well I am having a issue with virtual SMTP servers. I am trying to make it so each domain on my windows 2003 box (Virtual dedicated) has its own IP address for sending mail. I setup a virtual SMTP server for each IP and domain but when I send mail through that IP/Domain it will use the servers default IP address to relay the mail out.

Do you have any idea how to fix this so each virtual SMTP is sending with its own IP address? Or do you know of a SMTP server I can istall that will let me configure it this way?

If I am understanding you question correctly, places like godaddy and yahoo and all of those places. Well the exact physical structure is probably a closely held secret, but basically you are dealing with banks and banks of rack mounted servers, petabytes of storage, . and just a pile of band-width. You can host your own server just as easily as any of the the big guys is you want to. All you need is either a static IP address or a dys-dns service and some kind of web-server. I use apache myself. free, and works just fine.

Me and my friends have a web show like iCarly. all we have right now is a sub domain on a blog website thats like myspace. Okay so I downloaded apache and I am using Ubuntu Linux. What I want to know is how do I make my http://localhost accessible to everyone over the internet? Do I need a domain name or can I use an IP address?

You can access using the IP its just a little hard to remember!

The access will be to the PUBLIC IP (which on most home connections changes!) To see your current IP go to http://whatismyip.com the number that shows is your public IP.

You may find you have to use a service which will %26quot;track%26quot; your IP like http://dyndns.com this is a dynamic IP service which can keep your changing IP associated with a domain name. You can use a name from them even like myserver.dyndns.com! It is easier than the IP route.

If you setup your Ubuntu behind a router, you will need to port forward port 80 (in the router) to the private IP of your server. If you use https you also need to forward port 443. (see http://portforward.com for how to do that for your router etc)

Check with your ISP before you do this! Many have restrictions on running servers off of HOME dsl/cable lines and block port 80 inbound to stop the use, so check with them first to see if it is allowed.

Have fun but do check before your ISP kicks you off for running a server (some allow it some don%26#039;t!)

well the domain name will come hand in hand with ip address (i know you need a domain name to run apache with server 2003, but im not too familiar with ubuntu, im sure youll need a domain name anyway)

not sure how you promote ubuntu to a domain controller.

anyways..

you can use port forward on your router to forward all port 80 (or http traffic) to your ip address (servers ip)

set the server ports on your router (should be a separate page for this defining what ports to use for HTTP and FTP traffic.

make sure your server has a static private ip address instead of DHCP assigned.

I just designed a website for a client and they want me to put the new site up for them. They have their site at Network Solutions and had a package where their current site was built for them with no FTP capapility. I just upgraded it for them tonight so now they do have that capapbility. What do I have to do in order to pull the old site down and then put the new one up. The way they have it now when you go to their website it looks like this: www.theirdomain.com/pages/1/index.html. So obviously whoever put made the first site had no clue what they were doing when uploading it. What I want to do is upload it so there isn%26#039;t all that garbage after the domain name. How do I configure it so that it works that way?

Anyway to get domain names for free?

I am part of the Latino Club at my school and would like to reserve mhslatinoclub.org for us to use as part of our organization. Anyway to get it for free? I dont want to pay $10 or more a year because I am graduating in spring and that would be pointless to keep paying for something that I wont be a part of after school ends.

Depending on how technically minded you are and whether or not you have a Broadband internet package at home the easiest possibly solution for you would be to simply register a domain name with a company such as 1and1.co.uk or 123-reg.co.uk or -here comes the lame plug- http://www.UK2.net ....yes yes I know I work for them but we have sold over a million domains (stop the tut tutting im trying to be impartial here).

i suggest you find a free host that won%26#039;t put force ads on your site and have a paid plan as well. that shows there are really in web hosting biz and use their free plan to promote their paid services. while you are in the learning process you can search around for hosting plan that would fit your need or getting info on getting traffic to your site.

You do not need to put in public_html, you need to put them under the directory which corresponds to your domain, like if your domain name is http://aplis.net/ you will find a directory named aplis.net in your hosting account. Provided that you have added the domain in your hosting account.

Why has my domain gone from page 1 on google uk to page 79 (for a particular search term)?

My website is 2 weeks old, and I have enjoyed being the 3rd %26#039;hit%26#039; on google uk for a particular (and very relevant!) search term. This has gone from position no. 3 to no. 781, a couple of days ago. My web hosting company submitted a ranking progress report twice within a week, because I upgraded my marketing package within this week, and they automatically do another one with each package. Google don%26#039;t like people (I didn%26#039;t even do it myself!) submitting ranking reports more than once a month. Have they responded to this by jettisoning me off the 3rd spot to the 781st for my keyword? I just don%26#039;t know what%26#039;s going on.

PS A lot of the stuff from my website is original (i%26#039;d say 60% of my own research)

Seems to me you know exactly why they have penalized your position. Google is very strict in terms of the rules they enforce with their search engine results, and if you break them the bots will penalize your site. This isn%26#039;t something out of the ordinary and happens a lot of the time. Sometimes after a few more days your position will go back to normal as some people have occured weird positions on the search engine result pages and a few days later it%26#039;s back to normal.
